About Peshtigo, WI
Peshtigo was first settled around 1838 and grew as a logging and wood-products community along the Peshtigo River. In 1871, the city was destroyed by the Peshtigo Fire (America’s most devastating fire) occurring the same day as the Chicago Fire. Peshtigo was rebuilt and later incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1903. Today, wood products remain an important part of the local economy, and the origin of the city’s name is believed to come from Native American language and history.
